What is the Calories Burned Calculator?

The Calories Burned Calculator helps you estimate how much energy (in calories) you expend during various activities and exercises. It uses Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) values, your body weight, and the duration of the activity to provide an accurate estimate.

Practical Examples & Reference Guide

Example: Running vs. Walking

Scenario: You want to know how many calories you burn walking for 60 minutes versus running for 30 minutes.

Details:

  • Your Weight: 70 kg
  • Activity 1: Walking (brisk, 3.5 mph) - approx. 4.3 MET
  • Activity 2: Running (6 mph) - approx. 9.8 MET

Calculations:

  • Walking: 4.3 MET × 70 kg × 1 hour = ~301 calories
  • Running: 9.8 MET × 70 kg × 0.5 hours = ~343 calories

Conclusion: Even though you walked for twice as long, a 30-minute run burned slightly more calories due to its higher intensity.

In-Depth Technical Guide

How Are Calories Burned Calculated?

Our calculator uses the scientifically established MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) formula:

Formula: Calories Burned = MET × Weight (in kg) × Duration (in hours)

What is MET?

MET represents the energy cost of physical activities as a multiple of your resting metabolic rate. One MET is defined as the energy it takes to sit quietly. For example:

  • 1 MET: Resting, sitting quietly
  • 3 METs: Walking slowly
  • 8 METs: Vigorous sports like basketball
  • 10+ METs: Fast running or intense swimming

Why Weight Matters

Heavier individuals require more energy to move their bodies. Therefore, a person weighing 90 kg will burn more calories performing the same activity for the same duration as a person weighing 60 kg.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this calculator?
This calculator provides a very good estimate based on standardized MET values. However, individual factors such as age, gender, body composition, fitness level, and environmental conditions can cause variations in actual calories burned.
Do I burn calories when I sleep?
Yes! Your body is constantly burning calories to maintain basic functions like breathing, circulating blood, and repairing cells. This is known as your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Sleeping has a MET value of approximately 0.9.
Should I use Metric or Imperial units?
You can use whichever you prefer. The calculator seamlessly handles both kg and lbs, converting imperial units behind the scenes to perform the standard MET calculations.
What if my specific activity is not listed?
Try selecting the closest activity in terms of intensity. For instance, if your specific type of dance isn't listed, you can select a generic 'Aerobic Dance' or 'General Dancing' which will have a similar MET value.
