How We Calculate Lean Body Mass

To calculate Lean Body Mass (LBM), scientists and medical professionals have developed multiple anthropometric formulas over the years. Our calculator utilizes the most widely recognized and validated equations.

For Adults (Age > 14):

  1. The Boer Formula: Generally considered the most accurate formula for estimating LBM. It factors in both height and weight while varying significantly between men and women.
  2. The James Formula: Another prominent formula that has been widely used in clinical settings, though it is known to sometimes underestimate LBM in heavily muscled individuals.
  3. The Hume Formula: Provides a reliable alternative baseline that relies heavily on height-weight ratios.

For Children (Age 14 and younger):

  • The Peters Formula: Estimating LBM in children is complex due to rapid growth phases. The Peters formula calculates the Estimated Extracellular Volume (eECV) first, which is then used to safely derive the Lean Body Mass. This prevents the inaccurate readings that adult formulas produce when applied to prepubescent bodies.

The relationship is simple: Body Fat Mass = Total Body Weight - Lean Body Mass

What is the difference between Lean Body Mass (LBM) and Muscle Mass?
Lean Body Mass is the total weight of your body minus fat. This includes muscles, bones, water, and organs. Muscle mass is strictly the weight of your muscles. Therefore, your LBM will always be significantly higher than your muscle mass alone.
Which formula is the most accurate?
For most healthy adults, the Boer formula is currently considered the most accurate and reliable estimation for Lean Body Mass. However, it's beneficial to look at the James and Hume formulas as well to get an average range, as individual body compositions vary.
Why do my results show different values for the same weight?
Different formulas were developed using different demographic data sets and assumptions. The Boer formula relies slightly differently on the height-to-weight ratio compared to the James formula. Providing all three formulas ensures you have a complete overview.
Can I increase my Lean Body Mass?

Why does the calculator ask for my age?
The formulas used to calculate adult Lean Body Mass become highly inaccurate when applied to children because of their different body water percentages and growth states.
